The God Who Sees You
Have you ever felt like you were all alone—walking a long, isolated road with no one coming through? Have you ever felt like no one truly cares—the winds are blowing all around you, but you can’t feel anything? Do you feel like no one sees you—the seas raging, the waves clashing against you at every turn? Let me tell you the story of the God who sees you.
There is a story in the Bible, found in Genesis 16. Sarai, weary of waiting for a child, gave her maid Hagar to Abram. Hagar conceived, but instead of joy, it brought tension and hurt. Feeling mistreated, Hagar fled into the wilderness. Alone and broken, she was met by the Angel of the LORD, who called her by name. God saw her, heard her pain, and gave her a promise: her son would be named Ishmael, meaning “God hears.”
In that moment, Hagar realized something life-changing. She wasn’t invisible. She wasn’t forgotten. She wasn’t just a servant girl on the run. She was seen—truly seen—by the living God. And she gave Him a name: El Roi—“You are the God who sees me.”
There is an excellent line from the movie Avatar that says, “I see you.” It’s a simple yet profound statement that communicates deep love and understanding. Chaos and loss were present, yet between two of the main characters (one earthly and another unearthly) a beautiful exchange took place—they locked gazes and communicated this idea: no matter what, no matter how bad things seem or become, we are in this together and I am for you; I know you, I love you, I see you. This is true for you right now. There is a God who sees you, and He says, “I know you, I made you, I am with you, and I am for you.”
- When you feel overlooked… He sees you.
- When your heart is heavy… He sees you.
- When you’ve made mistakes and want to run away… He sees you.
- When the situation feels impossible… He sees you.
You may be in a wilderness right now, but take comfort in this unshakable truth: there is a God who knows your name, knows your story, and meets you right where you are. He is the God who sees you, and He is for you.
On that day when you felt alone with no one coming through, you came across an individual. First, a curiosity was sparked, and then a connection formed, as if you were meant to encounter this person. They spoke with you, and for some reason, you were able to open up to them; you cried, you laughed, and you felt seen. That was God. He saw you then, and He sees you now.
Now, if you look, you will see; if you listen, you will hear; if you are open, you will feel Him—Jesus—saying to you, “Come, my child, I see you.”
